External Shading Is Key To Tackling Overheating

Cool, energy-efficient homes are hot property!

External Roller Blinds

As global temperatures reach record highs, developers of cool, energy efficient homes are in high demand. And whilst overheating may not appear to be the most pressing environmental issue in Britain with our cold Winters and temperamental Summers, with 83% of Londoners suffering from an uncomfortably home in 2015, this issue is only set to escalate.

And, given that 2016 is expected to be the hottest year on record, an effective solution to restoring cool, comfortable internal environments for occupants has never been so sought-after.

In fact, some meteorologists have predicted that by 2050, global temperatures could rise by as much as 4°C. In Britain, this could result in successive Summer heatwaves and pronounced temperature rises, particularly in dense, heavily populated urban areas, where overheating issues are already at their worst.

Buildings that are most severely effected by excess heat tend be those that boast large expanses of glazing, a popular benchmark for aspirational city living. And whilst this surplus glass draws plenty of light into a property, often associated with health and well-being, ironically, this glazing can also cause a great deal of discomfort, particularly during the Summer months when internal temperatures can soar.

However, external shading, such as louvres, shutters and blinds, remain a growing force within housing architecture as a tried and tested method to effectively tackling the issue of overheating. Furthermore, several recent schemes, such as Hanham Hall in Bristol by HTA Design, have incorporated shading as a fundamental aspect of the facade design.
