Let There Be Light

Increasing the amount of light in your home is an ideal way to banish the gloom and create a bright and airy feel in your property, particularly at this time of year with the nights drawing in and the days getting shorter. There are a number of clever lighting options available which you can take advantage of. For example, installing uplighters in the corner of a room will pool light on the ceiling, increasing both the amount of light and the feeling of space. So here we give a quick guide to some top tips for increasing and making the most of the light in your home.

Skylights (see picture above)

Adding windows is a classic option when it comes to increasing the amount of natural light in your home. Skylights in particular can be a great way to dramatically increase the natural light in a room, and a well-placed skylight can ultimately let in significantly more light than more traditional window fittings.

Mirrors

Mirrors are a great way to make the most of the light in any room. A well-placed mirror can really open up the space in your home and enhance a rooms natural light. The key is to choose the right mirror for the right location in your home. For example placing a full length mirror across from the windows in a room is a great way of maximising natural light, as the sunlight entering your windows will be reflected back from its surface into your room.

Decor

If it's a bright and airy feel you’re going for in your home, it's best to stick with neutral tones and colours when it comes to your decor, as this can help brighten the look and feel of any room. This doesn't mean you have to stick to plain interiors however, for example you could introduce some brighter accents and tones with your choice of furnishing to add a welcome splash of colour.

Blinds

External blinds are a great solution when it comes to managing the light in your home effectively, allowing you to create perfect naturally lit spaces in your home, whilst also acting to minimise bright light to reduce glare. These blinds also have the added advantage of helping to protect your furniture too. Whilst letting some natural sunlight into your home can be ideal, it's important to remember that sunlight can cause damage to your furniture too. For example, it can bleach your wooden furniture and cause the colour of other materials such as leather to fade. However external blinds can create a handy UV barrier ensuring your furniture stays protected, making them the ideal solution.
