On 21st March 2026, the fourth annual Global Shading Day returns and we’re proud to be supporting it once again.
Organised and led internationally by the European Solar Shading Organisation (ES-SO) and co-ordinated in the UK by the BBSA, Global Shading Day is a growing international movement but around one powerful message:
Shading makes a difference.
And it truly does.
The Climate Challenge We Cannot Ignore
Buildings account for approximately 40% of total EU energy consumption and 36% of CO₂ emissions. Of that energy use, around 66% is used for heating and cooling.
Without intervention:
- Space cooling demand is expected to more than double by 2050
- Heat-related deaths are projected to increase by up to 50%
- Energy grids will come under increasing strain
Yet one of the most effective and immediate climate-control strategies is frequently overlooked:
External solar shading.
A Simple Principle. A Powerful Impact.
Solar shading is not complicated — but it is science.
Stop the sun reaching the glass, and you stop overheating.
Add insulation at the façade, and you retain warmth.
Dynamic external shading systems work with the building, not against it:
In Summer
- Prevent excessive solar heat gain
- Dramatically reduce cooling loads
- In many cases, remove the need for mechanical cooling altogether
- Minimise glare while maintaining natural daylight
In Winter
- Allow beneficial solar gain when needed
- Provide an additional insulating barrier once heat is captured
- Reduce reliance on heating systems
All Year Round
- Improve occupant comfort
- Enhance privacy
- Protect interiors from UV damage
- Reduce overall operational energy demand
This is not a new idea. It is a proven, passive solution that has simply been underutilised, particularly in the UK.
The Bigger Picture
By 2050, effective use of solar shading across Europe could:
- Save an estimated €235 billion in energy costs
- Prevent 100 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions
As Anders Hall, President of ES-SO, puts it:
“The cheapest energy is the energy we do not need to use.”
That philosophy aligns perfectly with our belief at Caribbean Blinds: prevention is better than cure.
Why We Support Global Shading Day
At Caribbean Blinds, we have dedicated ourselves to external shading for decades because we know the difference it makes — not just to comfort, but to energy performance, sustainability and long-term resilience.
Global Shading Day is about raising awareness.
It is about encouraging homeowners, architects, developers and policymakers to consider shading early in the design process — not as an afterthought, but as a fundamental building-performance strategy.
Because shading doesn’t just improve buildings.
It helps future-proof them.
