Caribbean MD Stuart Dantzic explains why signing the Family Business Pledge is a natural step for a family firm built on trust, responsibility and long-term thinking.
For almost 40 years, Caribbean has been built on family values. From our beginnings as a small East Anglian business founded by my parents, Ray and Angie Dantzic, in 1987, we have grown into the UK’s leading manufacturer of external shading solutions. Yet the principles that have guided us from the very start remain at the heart of everything we do.
That is why I am delighted that Caribbean has signed the Family Business Pledge, a set of principles laid down by the excellent Family Business United organisation.
The Pledge reflects the way we have always approached running our business. As a family company, we believe we have a responsibility to think beyond short-term goals and make decisions that protect the long-term health of the business for the next generation.
When my brother Bradley and I took over from our parents in 2016, we knew we were taking responsibility for a legacy, the values that shaped it and the people who helped build it.
Putting people before profit has always been central to our approach. Our employees are individuals with their own skills, ambitions and ideas, not simply resources. We work hard to create a culture built on trust, respect and long-term relationships because we know our success depends on the people behind the Caribbean name.
Being rooted in our community is equally important. Our manufacturing facility in Sudbury, Suffolk, provides employment and opportunities locally, and we recognise that our success is closely linked to the wellbeing of the community around us.
The Pledge also reinforces our adherence to operating with integrity. We believe in responsible decision-making, strong governance and accountability at every level of the business. At the same time, we continue to focus on our environmental responsibilities, from developing solar-powered shading solutions to improving our manufacturing processes and reducing our impact on the planet.
Signing the Pledge is also about preserving the entrepreneurial spirit on which Caribbean was founded. My parents created a business based on innovation, quality and customer care, and those values continue to guide us today. We also support the principles that guide Family Business United because it champions the contribution family firms make to the economy and society, providing a platform for businesses to share knowledge, experience and support one another.
For Caribbean, this Pledge is a commitment to our employees, customers and wider community that we will continue to protect the values that built our business while creating a stronger future for the generations that follow.
