Gardening Has Been Found to Improve Health

Patients across the country have recently trialled a new ‘green’ prescription service in a bid to improve public health, with an overwhelmingly positive outcome. A recent survey found that 72% noticed positive changes to their health with more than half feeling stronger and fitter as a result of these lifestyle alterations.

Councillor Izzi Seccombe, in charge of public health at The Local Government Association explains how “not every visit to the GP is necessarily a medical one. The green prescription model is something that could help tackle major health conditions such as obesity and diabetes. There are already some good examples where this is being piloted in the UK, and it is something we should consider on a nationwide basis.”

The scheme aims to encourage a more active lifestyle, with the belief that in many instances physical activity outdoors is just as if not more effective than prescribing pills. With 44% of Brits failing to do any exercise at all, doctors are increasingly trying to inspire patients to embark on lighter activities that they can incorporate into their daily routine, such as walking and gardening.

In fact, studies have shown that regular gardening can reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and obesity as well as improving balance, so there really has never been a better time to get outside and get moving.
