Take The Party Outside This Winter

Yes, winter means that it’s a bit on the chilly side, but there are plenty of ways to cope with the vagaries of the weather and still enjoy an incredible garden party.

Winter Barbecue

Forget about “barbecue weather” meaning hot, sunny summer days – winter is a great time to have a barbecue. After all, it gives you good, hot food, and provides a perfect source of heat to gather around. Even if you prefer to keep the cooking in the kitchen, you can still host your party outdoors – just stick to good, warming food and make sure that it comes out piping hot, one course at a time. With fire pits or patio heaters to provide warmth and garden awnings to provide the reassurance that your food won’t get rained on, you’ll be set for a perfect party.

Bonfire Fondue

If you have a fire pit in your garden, or you decide to build a bonfire for your party, you can provide your guests with a perfect al fresco fondue. All you need is a stable griddle or a spit that you can set over the flames, a good pot to make it in and, of course, the right ingredients. Choosing your cheese to match the base is important – popular fondue cheeses like Gruyere go very well with white wine, but if you prefer to use beer then you may find cheddar provides a better complement.

Perfect Drinks

When you hold your garden party outdoors in winter, you can be assured of one thing – lovely cold drinks!  If it looks like being particularly cold, you can recycle old sweaters or knit little cosies to make your cold drinks more comfortable to hold.

Of course, when you’re outside in the cold weather what you really want is a good hot drink to warm you up. Why not offer your party guests a delicious traditional whisky hot toddy – zesty, warming, and great for preventing winter colds, too!

Start with hot water (100ml per serving) and add three cloves and a cinnamon stick; allow them to infuse for two or three minutes, then dissolve in two teaspoons of honey, and add 25ml of lemon juice, and 50ml of good whisky. Garnish with a slice of lemon and a sprinkle of ground nutmeg, and serve immediately. We recommend choosing a good single malt with strong flavours, as anything with delicate notes would be overpowered by the other flavours.
